New York City: Violence Escalates, Police Budget Slashed

Last week the number of people shot in New York City more than tripled compared to the same period in 2019. There were 101 gun shot victims including 18 people murdered, according to police sources.

The city announced a $1 billion cut to the $6 billion police budget last week, redistributing the money to summer youth programs, education and family and social services.

“The Mayor and the City Council have surrendered the city to lawlessness. Things won’t improve until New Yorkers hold them responsible.”

Patrick Lynch, police union president

Mayor Bill De Blasio said New Yorkers have faith in the Police Department’s ability to control overtime.
